Summary
DMCC company formation lets you set up a 100% foreign-owned company in Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT), Dubai’s most awarded free zone. This guide explains what DMCC means, license types, the real setup cost from about AED 27,000, share capital, visas, required documents, commodity trading membership, the step-by-step registration process and how DMCC compares with IFZA, Meydan and DIFC, so you can choose with confidence.
Most founders I meet already know DMCC’s name. What they don’t know is the true cost, how visa quotas work and whether DMCC is worth it for their business. After years of handling business setup in Dubai across every major free zone, I can tell you DMCC is an excellent choice for the right company and an expensive mistake for the wrong one. This guide helps you decide.
What Is DMCC? Meaning and Full Form
DMCC stands for Dubai Multi Commodities Centre. It is a Government of Dubai authority and free zone, founded in 2002 to grow commodity trade through Dubai. Today it is far more than commodities.
- Over 26,000 member companies from around 180 countries, according to DMCC
- Global Free Zone of the Year from the Financial Times’ fDi Magazine for nine consecutive years
- Location: Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) and Uptown Dubai, next to Dubai Marina with two metro stations
- Sectors: commodities, trading, consulting, technology, crypto, gaming, AI, shipping and holding companies
When people search for “company formation in JLT”, they mean DMCC. Every business licensed in the JLT free zone towers is a DMCC company.
Why Choose DMCC Company Formation?
- 100% foreign ownership with no local partner
- 0% corporate tax on qualifying income for Qualifying Free Zone Persons
- Premium JLT address that carries weight with banks, investors and institutional clients
- Bank-friendly jurisdiction: UAE banks know DMCC structures well
- Commodity infrastructure: gold and diamond exchanges, tea and coffee centre, vaults and DMCC Tradeflow
- Sector hubs: DMCC Crypto Centre, Gaming Centre and AI Centre with community packages
- Full profit and capital repatriation

DMCC also allows several company structures, including a DMCC Free Zone Company (LLC), a branch of a UAE or foreign company, and holding company setups used for asset protection and group structures. If you plan a holding structure, our offshore company formation page explains the alternatives.

DMCC Commodity Membership and Tradeflow
Some activities need more than a trading license:
- Gold and precious metals: Membership and strict responsible sourcing and KYC rules. See our gold trading license
- Diamonds: Registration with the Dubai Diamond Exchange and Kimberley Process compliance.
- Tea, coffee and spices: Access to the DMCC Tea and Coffee Centre. Read about spices trading.
- Energy and oil: Specialist activities and enhanced due diligence. Our oil trading business guide covers this.
DMCC Tradeflow is an online register that records ownership of physical commodities held in DMCC-approved warehouses. It helps traders transfer title and use stored goods as collateral for trade finance. Consulting and service companies do not need it.
DMCC Company Registration Process: Step-by-Step
- Choose your activities and license type. Confirm if any activity needs a commodity membership or external approval.
- Reserve your trade name through the DMCC portal.
- Submit your application with passports, proof of address and business plan.
- Pass compliance and KYC checks, including source of funds for some activities.
- Sign your office agreement: flexi-desk, co-working or a full office in JLT or Uptown.
- Sign the Articles of Association and pay fees.
- Receive your trade license and establishment card.
- Apply for visas: entry permit, medical test and Emirates ID. Our PRO services team handles every step.
- Open a corporate bank account. We support corporate bank account opening.
- Register for corporate tax and set up your books.
How long does DMCC setup take? The license is often issued within one to three weeks after a complete application. Allow four to eight weeks for full setup including visas and a bank account.
Consultant tip: Decide your visa needs before you choose an office. In DMCC, office size drives your visa quota, and changing offices later costs time and money.
DMCC Visa Rules
- Flexi-desk: usually supports a small number of visas, ideal for founders and lean teams
- Serviced or fitted office: visa quota grows with office size
- Family sponsorship: DMCC visa holders can sponsor family members if they meet GDRFA salary and housing rules
- Long-term residency: eligible investors can explore the UAE Golden Visa
Documents Required for DMCC Registration
Individual shareholders – Passport copy with at least six months’ validity – Proof of residential address – Passport-size photograph – NOC from your current UAE sponsor, if applicable – CV or background summary for some activities
Corporate shareholders – Certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles, attested – Board resolution appointing the authorised representative – Register of shareholders and ultimate beneficial owners – Passport and address proof for every UBO
Foreign corporate documents need notarisation, apostille or UAE embassy attestation. Our team coordinates the full attestation chain.
DMCC vs IFZA vs Meydan vs DIFC
| Feature | DMCC | IFZA | Meydan | DIFC |
| Starting setup cost | From about AED 27,000 | From about AED 12,500 | From about AED 12,500 | USD based, much higher |
| Location | JLT, Uptown Dubai | Dubai Silicon Oasis | Meydan, Nad Al Sheba | DIFC, Sheikh Zayed Road |
| Address prestige | Premium | Standard | Good | Premium |
| Commodities | Specialist hub | Limited | Limited | No |
| Regulated finance | Limited | No | No | Full DFSA regime |
| Best for | Commodities, trading, premium consulting, crypto | Budget consulting and trading | E-commerce and startups | Banks, asset managers, brokers |
Choose DMCC if your business trades commodities, needs banking credibility, serves institutional clients or benefits from a JLT address. Choose IFZA or another cost-effective zone if budget matters more than address. Choose DIFC if you need a full financial services licence from the DFSA. If you want to trade directly with the UAE market, compare mainland company formation in Dubai. See all options in our free zone business setup in Dubai guide.
Is DMCC Worth the Cost?
In my experience, DMCC pays for itself when the address or the ecosystem earns you money. A gold trader gains access to vaults, the Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange network and banks that already understand the sector. A consulting firm pitching to multinationals wins trust faster with a JLT address. A crypto or gaming startup benefits from DMCC’s sector centres, events and investor network.
It is harder to justify for a one-person online business or a freelancer who rarely meets clients. In those cases, a lower-cost free zone gives the same 100% ownership and tax benefits for a fraction of the fee. If you trade with Dubai clients through a general trading company, DMCC’s broad activity list is a strong fit.
Tax, Audit and Ongoing Compliance
- Corporate tax: DMCC companies that meet Qualifying Free Zone Person conditions pay 0% on qualifying income. Non-qualifying revenue above 5% of total revenue or AED 5 million, whichever is lower, can lose that status. Otherwise 9% applies above AED 375,000.
- Annual audit: Mandatory for DMCC companies. Our accounting services keep you audit-ready.
- VAT: Register once taxable supplies pass AED 375,000.
- UBO and ESR records: Keep beneficial ownership details up to date.
- License renewal: Renew yearly with a valid office agreement.
Common Mistakes in DMCC Setup
- Choosing DMCC for a small consultancy that only needs a low-cost license
- Picking a flexi-desk and later needing more visas
- Missing commodity membership for gold, diamonds or energy activities
- Ignoring the annual audit and QFZP rules
- Using unattested corporate documents
